The Key – pt2

“You seriously expect me to give credence to this latest wild theory? That this Weavil, whatever it is, holds the key to all the mysteries?” Scully asked, made more irritable by her unaccountable lapse back in the alley.

“Maybe not all of them,” Mulder replied, grinning. “But the fact that shadowy strangers are after certainly indicates that it is an important piece of the puzzle.”

“Shadowy strangers..?” Her gaze wandered to the pulsing neon of New York City streets beyond the car window.

Mulder noted her abstracted expression with curiosity and no little consternation. Who had that tall stranger been?

Sneaking into the teacher’s lounge had been tricky, and the trip through the flue network more dizzying than usual, but neither compared to the whirlwind of light and activity of the large city where Harry, Ron and Hermione had found themselves. The mysterious parchment whose clues had led them here now only showed a directional rosette, regardless of the many spells Hermione had cast upon it.

Pushing through the evening crowd, a dark chill swept up from behind them. Unnoticed by nearby muggles, a shadowy form glided by, sending a shiver up Harry’s spine; familiar and foreign, but unmistakably evil…

Within a low-lit room high above the city streets, the Weavil shines softly against the darkness of the night, a beacon to the seekers who would tip the balance to favor light or shadow. All Fates now wind and weave to that crossroad, but for now, mystery and towered maze of stone shrouds the Key, while the champions struggle against each other and inalterable time.

Somewhere down the block, upon the winter deserted patio of the towering Hotel Luxe, an oddly dressed gentleman wandered confidently from the deep shadow cast by a shabby wooden police box tucked into a corner.

Ducking into the gaudily painted ‘Olde Tyme Candy Shoppe’ on the corner, Harry and his companions watched worriedly until the police officer walked away from the door. He had followed them a little too curiously for comfort.

“That was much too close,” Hermione whispered wearily.

“Yeah, but this is a pretty brilliant place to hide,” Ron suggested, hungrily eyeing the sweets.

“Ron! We’ve a job to do!” Hermione scolded.

“Ah, but there‘s room for exploration, wherever and whenever work takes you,” said a smiling man, pocketing his purchases as he nudged aside the long multicolored scarf draped over his coat.

Viv said it, but I just love how you can capture so much in these drabbles. You've got the fandoms spot on, and it's still funny, and atmospheric, and...oh, I want to be you! (((hugs)))
